Salesforce has completed 65 acquisitions to date, with the recent acquisition of Slack one of the biggest bets by Salesforce for $27.7B. In terms of acquisitions, 2016 was the best year for Salesforce with 12 acquisitions including Demandware, Krux, and Quip.

These acquisitions made by Salesforce come across as good news to various Salesforce partners since its increase in their service offerings and will attract more clients towards them. Technological upgradations on the Salesforce platform are required for advancing its customer data platform, Customer 360

Some of the key acquisitions made by Salesforce till 2020 include

1.Sendia (April 2006,Price -$15M) –

Salesforce’s mobile journey starts with the acquisition of wireless technology startup Sendia, which’s engaged in the development and marketing of wireless enterprise solutions for wireless handheld devices and applications.

2.Instranet (August 2008,Price -$31.5M)

InStranet provides multi-channel knowledge applications for automating content and knowledge delivery for servicing and sales. Now rebranded to Salesforce Knowledge

3.GroupSwim (December 2009,Price-$7M)

GroupSwim is a leading provider of on-demand social software for businesses. Now part of Salesforce Chatter

4.Heroku (December 2010,Price-$212M)

Heroku was acquired by Salesforce.com in 2010 for $212 million. Heroku is a cloud platform as a service (PaaS) supporting several programming languages.Now Part of Salesforce Platform.

5.Radian6 (March 2011,Price -$340M)

Redian6 was established in 2006 and it helps companies monitor the social web( like Youtube,Facebook,Twitter,blogs,forums etc.) in order to provide actionable insights in real-time , which enable its clients to effectively join conversations with customers and prospects.It was acquired by Salesforce for $340M.

6.Buddy Media (May 2012,Price-$649M)

Buddy Media is a well known social media marketing platform, helps companies build connections and maintain relationships with customers. It was acquired by Salesforce for $649M.Buddy Media was put together with Radian6 to become Social Studio (part of Marketing Cloud)

7.ExactTarget ( June 2013,Price-$2.5B)

ExactTarget is a leading provider of on-demand email marketing software solutions. This digital company primarily caters to B2B marketers.ExactTarget had acquired Pardot 6 months previously, now able to position themselves to both B2B and B2C prospects.

8.SteelBrick (December 2015,Price-$360M)

SteelBrick is a provider of quote-to-cash application software that is native on the Salesforce platform. It is now rebranded to Salesforce CPQ.

9.Demandware ( June 2016 ,Price-$2.8B)

Demandware provides a hosted service that would allow companies to develop and manage easy-to-use, customizable e-commerce websites, rather than building a site from scratch. It was acquired by Salesforce in 2016 for $2.8B. The company was subsequently renamed Salesforce Commerce Cloud.

10.Quip (August 2016,Price-$750M)

A quip is a collaboration tool with built-in office suite functionality, including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software. In July 2016, Salesforce announced the acquisition of Quip for an estimated total of $750 million

11.Krux (October 2016,Price- $800M)

Krux is a leading data management platform that unifies, segments, and activates audiences to increase engagement with users, prospects, and customers. It was acquired by salesforce in 2016 for $800 million

12.CloudCraze (March 2018,Price -Unknown)

CloudCraze delivers robust B2B commerce native on Salesforce that allows businesses to generate online revenue. With the addition of CloudCraze to the Salesforce Commerce Cloud, Salesforce and its customers can now take advantage of this shift to digital commerce, enabling business buyers to browse and purchase online as easily as consumers shop today.

13.MuleSoft ( March 2018,Price-$6.5B)

MuleSoft is a well-known integration software for connecting applications, data, and devices. Its product, Anypoint Platform is designed to integrate software as a service (SaaS), on-premises software, legacy systems, and other platforms. It was acquired by Salesforce for $6.5B

14.Tableau (August 2019,Price-$15.7B)

Tableau is a robust and rapidly growing data visualization tool used in the Business Intelligence Industry. It helps in clarifying raw data into a very easily understandable format. Data analysis is very fast with Tableau and the visualizations created are in the form of dashboards and worksheets.it was acquired by Salesforce for $15.7B

15.ClickSoftware (August 2019,Price-$1.35B) –

ClickSoftware provides automated mobile-workforce-management and service-optimization solutions for enterprises and small businesses. The company’s software is used by service companies to streamline the scheduling and dispatching of field service employees. It was acquired by Salesforce for $1.35B

16.Evergage (February 2020,Price -Unknown)

Evergage is a renowned cloud-based software company that allows users to collect, analyze, and respond to user behavior on their websites and web applications in real-time.

17.Vlocity (February 2020,Price $1.33B)

Vlocity, an industry cloud, and mobile software provider was built indigenously on the Salesforce platform and serves six specific industries, including health. It was acquired by Salesforce for $1.33B

18.Slack Technologies (December 2020,Price $27.7B)

Slack is a channel-based messaging platform. With Slack, people can work together more efficiently, connect all their software tools and services, and find the information that they need to do their best work — all within a secure, enterprise-grade environment. it was acquired by Salesforce for $27.7B

Salesforce has begun an aggressive acquisition strategy in recent years to boost its ability to battle Microsoft. With every acquisition, the company raises the capabilities of its platform and offerings. So far its returning value to shareholders, and also fueling growth.
